Focus on respect, images and media issues at the Göteborg Book Fair 2018
The Göteborg Book Fair’s 2018 seminar program hinges on three themes: Respect, Images and Media Issues. In total this autumn’s program encompasses 746 participants from 32 countries. The Book Fair will be held 27–30 September this year.

For the Respect theme, the Book Fair is highlighting subjects such as racism, populism, #MeToo and LGBT issues. The main cooperative partner is the Swedish public authority The Living History Forum.

Participants include, for example, the Russian-American journalist and author Masha Gessen, who in several books explores the allure of populism, and the Russian author Sergei Lebedev, who will meet with the British human rights activist and author Philippe Sands in a dialogue about crimes against humanity.

This year’s ALMA prize winner, Jacqueline Woodson, will speak about her autobiographic novel Brown Girl Dreaming which is being translated to Swedish. And the oppression of women will be in focus as the Saudi author and women’s rights activist, Manal al-Sharif, will tell us about how she broke the ban on women driving cars.

Image theme
For the Image theme, the Book Fair is cooperating with several partners. Among others they include the association of Swedish illustrators and graphic designers (Svenska Tecknare) as well as The Reading Movement, which will start its campaign Bildberättande och Konsten att Läsa Bilder (Picture Narration and the Art of Reading Images) at the Fair this autumn.

An exciting international meeting will take place when the prized illustrators Fumi Koike from Japan and Isabelle Arsenault from Canada will discuss inspiration and art in picture books. The artist Jockum Nordström, who is current with illustrations for a book with Tolstoy’s fables, will discuss narration through images together with Sara Teleman, professor of illustration at the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm (Konstfack).

Media issues
This year, the Göteborg Media Days (Meg), will be a fully integrated part of the Book Fair. Within Meg’s framework, media issues will stand as their own pillar in the seminar program. Power and democracy in a changed media landscape will be discussed by, among others, Cilla Benkö (Radio Sweden), Tomas Franzén (Bonniers) and Hanna Stjärne (SVT). Among the international guests are The Guardian’s former editor-in-chief, Alan Rusbridger, and the American journalist Jon Keegan.

A star-spangled fair

Among this year’s international guests you will also see the British queen of feel-good, Jojo Moyes, whose books have sold nearly 30 million copies and have been translated to some 30 languages as well as the best-selling American romance author, Sarah Morgan.

There is also Mikhail Zygar, who depicts Russian history at the beginning of the 20th century. Existential issues will be treated as Maggie O’Farrell examines how being close to death can make life shine brighter than ever and Matt Haig will emphasise the importance of living in the now.

In her latest book, the Danish author Suzanne Brøgger travels to Norway and is now sharing her discoveries from the hunt for what is uniquely Norwegian. Another figure who is out and about in the world is Jonas Jonasson’s hundred-year-old man, Allan Karlsson, who is making a comeback.

Meetings with authors
The hallmark of the seminar program has always been unique meetings with authors. Men and violence are in focus when the Irish author Colm Tóibín meets Daniel Galera from Brazil and the Swedish author Ida Linde. Jonas Hassen Khemiri and Geir Gulliksen will discuss fatherhood and family secrets.

The rapper Silvana Imam and Niviaq Korneliussen, one of the first Greenlandic authors to break through internationally, will speak about breaking norms and finding their own voice. The acclaimed British poet Kayo Chingonyi and the August Prize winner Johannes Anyuru will band together in a dialogue about identity, racism and the significance of language.

The investigative journalist, Bo Lindquist, who uncovered the Macchiarini scandal, will meet with the two doctors Oscar Simonson and Karl-Henrik Grinnemo, who were early to warn others about Macchiarini’s experiments.

Crimetime Göteborg

Sweden’s largest crime fiction festival, Crimetime, will also be part of the Book Fair. The program includes guests such as Donna Leon, Jessica Fellowes and Jørn Lier Horst. Camilla Läckberg, Håkan Nesser, Anders Roslund, Lars Kepler and Emelie Schepp are some of the Swedish authors who will be guests there.
