    Communicating through digital moving images

(theory + analysis 90 mins) Izabella Füzi, PhD (University of Szeged, Hungary)

The etymological sense of the term „communication” (based on the Latin munus meaning ’trading’, ‘swap’, ‘gift’) refers to sharing or giving conditioned by physical contact. By wearing our smart phones, our bodies are not only connected to a camera (when taking a selfie, for example), but also to a computer which inscribes our identity into the digital world. Digitalizing the visible world in the forms of moving images, locating and navigating our bodies with the aid of digital applications are only a few examples of the continuous translation between the offline and the online through mobile digital devices. The module maps the new genres of digital moving images (video blogs, video selfies, video chats, video essays, screenlife films) and helps to better understand the ways identities are constructed in the networked communication.

From Instagram to TikTok and Beyond: Visual Communication on Social Media Platforms

(theory and practice, 90mins) Zoltán Dragon, PhD (University of Szeged, Hungary)

There is a plethora of social media platforms where visual communication (photographs, GIFs, videos etc.) is the prime mode of contact - and their numbers and potentials multiply by the day. Mixed media, augmented reality and AI-related image-making have all become essential parts of creating appealing or successful visual messages - or simply entertaining alternatives to traditional photorealistic exchange. As a result, new generations experiment with belonging to a new kind of aesthetic society: belonging to the global community of visual communicators whose use of technology is a given. The module offers a short introduction of the development of digital media and the basics of visual communication on well-known social media platforms, prepares participants to analyze the different visual messages, and introduce the basic techniques and strategies by which they can become more conscious users and communicators themselves.

How to Be Instagram Famous? An Introduction to the Practice of Visual Communication in the Age of New Media

(practice, 90 mins) Zoltán Dragon, PhD (University of Szeged, Hungary)

Instagram and other visually oriented social media platforms have taken over the stage for effective communication in the digital age. From photographic images to short video clips, visual messages penetrate our everyday lives so much so that even average users need to be prepared not only to consume these types of content, but also to produce them. This module offers an introduction to successful techniques of image composition and processing, along with shooting and editing short videos for different formats to feature on different platforms. The focus is on creating content that easily adapts to the different media environments while retaining effective communication and the original concept. Participants will be able to follow the course by using apps on their mobile devices, but they will get basic introduction to the working of non-linear editing as well.

All News is Fake News? Finding information in the age of the New Media

(theory and analysis, 90 mins) Péter Bocsor, PhD (University of Szeged, Hungary)

The new media has changed the ways we receive information about the world, and our approach to the news we consume must also change with it. Technological development has made everyone a potential newscaster, but it also made us cautious about how we select and interpret our news sources. Rather than comfortably claiming that ‘all news is fake news’, our critical approach should help us both avoid falling victim to manipulation and recognize, when power speaks truth or truth is spoken to power. The workshop will use the media representation of the ongoing war in Ukraine as an illustration of the choices we need to make in order to select credible sources, identify relevant information and recognize forms of manipulation, such as political propaganda, information injections or psychological operations.

Real Presence against a Virtual Background: How to make online meetings efficient

(practice, 90 mins) Péter Bocsor, PhD (University of Szeged, Hungary)

Online education, virtual communities, home office. In the post-covid era much of our work and social life has moved to the digital world in the form of online video conferences, and yet, the simple techniques of creating a meaningful presence during these calls remain somewhat overlooked. By discussing technicalities from camera angle and lighting to tone of speech and call etiquette, the workshop is intended to help participants turn the limitations of online meetings to their advantage and use the unique features of these calls – _such as virtual proximity and intimacy or heightened intensity – _to create an effective online presence.
