The African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the EU’s vision for Global Gateways prioritising an AU-EU strategic partnership have both set ambitions to develop an African knowledge society through research and innovation. This is crucial to strengthen a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development. We need a new approach to tackle the AU’s and EU’s common challenges, from climate change to health to digitalisation.
To build and expand the African knowledge society, it is essential to enhance institutional capacities for excellent research through longstanding collaboration. This requires new, ambitious investments in African universities that would enable long-term institutional and scientific capacity building, supported by sustainable partnerships with European universities.
Looking to the upcoming AU-EU summit, how can we learn from past successes, crises and mistakes to do things better? What role should higher education and research play in the AU-EU strategic relationship of the future? How can we establish a new policy dialogue between scientists, university leaders and policymakers to develop a joint vision for African research and innovation, for the benefit of society?
