On Thursday 14 September, Lund University’s seventh annual scholarship ceremony took place. The ceremony was dedicated to international students who have received a scholarship for studies at Lund University, and the aim was for these students to get to know the donors and friends of the University.
The ceremony was held inside the University’s beautiful main auditorium, decorated for this special occasion with banners and flower arrangements – a suitable meeting place for the 120 guests who gathered in anticipation of participating in the celebration.
The University management and vice-chancellor Torbjörn von Schantz were also in attendance. The vice-chancellor welcomed the guests and commenced the evening with an inspiring and humorous speech about the important asset that these international students are to the University. Scholarships awarded to such prominent individuals allow the University to maintain its competitiveness.
After the vice-chancellor’s welcoming speech, senior lecturer in law Karol Nowak took the floor. No other Lund University lecturer has had more international students on their Master’s programme. With her lecture on Public International Law, she described her research focusing on the surveillance society and the level of protection a person can expect from the state.
It was then time for the students to share their experiences, represented by Master’s student Siqi Zhao, who gave an interesting speech about what the scholarship has meant to her. The ceremony concluded with grand music and, as a finale, all of the scholarship holders gathered for a group photo.
After the ceremony, as the participants socialised over canapés and sparkling wine in the historical Pillar Hall, the volume increased along with the mood. Many new ties were formed and the guests seemed to appreciate the opportunity to meet all the talented international students from different countries – each with a unique life story, family background, education and circle of friends, and all with the potential to become the next generation’s great leaders and community builders.
