The year of the Imaginal Carnival!
Yes, finally, four years have passed and Lund Carnival is back, this time in an imaginal guise. After a long winter, which is starting to show signs of spring, Lund Carnival is approaching, only THREE months away!

Every four years, Lund Carnival is celebrated – a weekend organised by Lund University students bringing entertainment to a large number of visitors. The Lund Carnival involves anything and everything that can amuse others while we, the organisers, amuse ourselves. No wonder the carnival has been a recurring element in Lund every four years since 1849. During the carnival weekend, our beloved Lundagård park transforms into a large carnival area with tents, tombola booths, student comedy shows, radio broadcasts, artists and, of course, food and beverages. The weekend also includes a carnival parade through the streets of Lund, spreading joy to all visitors who, in 2014, amounted to an estimated 400 000 people. Each carnival has its own theme, and these have varied greatly over the years. This year’s theme is Imaginal Carnival, representing the dreams, the fictitious and imaginative, which may be realised during the carnival.

Two weekends ago, the famous Uppropet! (roll call) took place – the day when all Lund students have the chance to become a carnival official. Already the night before, a long queue could be seen stretching all the way through Lundagård, and when the doors closed on Sunday evening, a total of 5 298 people had registered to participate in the 2018 Lund Carnival! A record number that we previously only dreamed of. The first 3 000 who queued up also had the chance to buy a coveted ticket to karneveljen (the carnival reveille) – a grandiose kick-off with a dazzlingly colourful show and after-party – to take place on 17 March at the Sparbanken Arena. This is a celebration that no carnival official wants to miss.

What’s new this year?
What separates Lund Carnival 2018 from 2014? Quite a few things in fact, and here’s a sneak peak of what they are. First and foremost, we have a brand new and amazing addition to the major entertainments – opera! A carnevalesque rendition of an opera performance will be put on inside a large tent south of Lund Cathedral. Another previous carnival feature has been resurrected in view of this year’s carnival, Smånöjena (minor entertainments) including three interactive carnival performances in separate tents in the carnival area. Finally, AdministerIT has developed a carnival app which made the registration at the carnival roll call super fast. With a maximum speed of less than 3 seconds per registration, the flow of people in and out of the Academic Society building was faster than ever, enabling the aspiring carnival officials not to have to stand outside in the cold for too long.

Entertainment
Besides the opera and Smånöjena, the carnival weekend will feature the children’s carnival Barnevalen, a carnival circus, movie, revue, show and student comedy show. There’s something for everyone!

Tickets
The ticket release for all major activities in this year’s Lund Carnival is scheduled for April. Keep an eye on the website for more information.

This special feature on the carnival goes to all you alumni of Lund University and we suspect that most of you have been active in or at least experienced a Lund Carnival during your years of study. Naturally, we hope that you are interested in returning for the carnival weekend in May. Reach out to your old Lund friends and make sure you set aside the best weekend of spring in your calendars: 18–20 May.
