Save the date - Sustainability Week in Lund 15–20 May 2017
During The Sustainability Week in Lund 2017 we will show Lund as a city of energy, ideas and enthusiasm in sustainability issues! Take part in meetings between the researchers, students, companies, local and regional society, organizations and citizens of Lund.
This is one of five scientific theme weeks 2017 when Lund University is celebrating 350 years of education and research. Come and share knowledge and discuss global and local sustainability challenges. More information and Facebook page for the event will come in the end of February. You can already now find some brief information about the Sustainability week in Swedish at the webpage for Sustainability Forum.

The Sustainability week in Lund 2017 is arranged by Lund University and the City of Lund, together with organizations, companies and others interested in sustainability issues.
Lund University and SEI in closer collaboration
In January 2017, Lund University signed memorandums of understanding with Stockholm Envirionmental Institute SEI. “I’m very optimistic about this new agreement,” said Torbjörn von Schantz, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University. “It’s not enough for universities to produce facts and data; we need to work with institutes like SEI that can bring our findings to policy-makers.”
Five scientific theme weeks will take place during the Lund University 350th jubilee (read more further down). During the first of these science weeks, 6-12 March 2017, the theme is "Is the world becoming a better place?" See the programme of the science week 6-12 March 2017
For Europe to achieve its long-term climate objectives, carbon-intensive industries have to contribute to reduced emissions.
The research project REINVENT will analyse decarbonisation in four industrial sectors: steel, plastics, paper, and meat and dairy. Project co-ordinator is Lars J. Nilsson at the Department of Environmental and Energy System Studies at Lund University. Read more

Lennart Olsson, Lunds universitet, 5 585 000 kronor fört "Utveckling och upptag av multifunktionella perenna odlingssystem för ökad hållbarhet och resiliens"
Johannes Rousk, Lunds universitet, 5 521 000 kronor för "Markmikroorganismernas uthållighet och resiliens mot klimatförändrings-inducerad torka i Etiopien"
Benjamin Smith, Lunds universitet, 5 185 000 kronor för "Skogsrestaurering och effekter på vattenresurser för smart jordbruk: en fallstudie av Kambodja (FRAWASA)"
Nytänkande till hjälp för utsatta barn. Nytt projekt vid Institutionen för service management och tjänstevetenskap, Campus Helsingborg. Projektet "Ledning för tjänsteinnovation i akutdriven verksamhet" tar sin utgångspunkt i att väntetiden för insatser till barn som far illa, som har sociala problem eller behöver bostad och fungerande skolgång är oacceptabelt lång. Nytt projekt om avfallsförebyggande. Anette Svingstedt och Hervé Corvellec vid Insitutionen för service management och tjänstevetenskap har fått medel från Energimyndigheten för att fortsätta sin forskning om hur avfallsproducerande verksamheterkan arbeta med att minska sina avfallsmängder. Läs mer

During 27/2-3/3 editor Miriam Frankel will visit Lund University to talk about how to pitch an idea and write for The Conversation, as well as have one-on-one meetings with researchers who want to start writing.
BIOECONOMY graduate reseárch school is open to all national/international PhD students. Each year about 20 PhDs will be admitted to BIOECONOMY.
BIOECONOMY is a collaborative learning platform at Lund University allowing researchers and Ph.D. students, across faculties/disciplines and research areas, as well as non-academic stakeholders to identify, carry out and communicate innovative, analytically advanced and yet problem-oriented research for a sustainable future bioeconomy covering the whole biomass value chain. In her newly started director’s blog, Emily Boyd of LUCSUS will highlight sustainability issues in relation to topics such as: leadership, gender, rights, and governance.

Samma dag fortsätter serien med populärvetenskapliga föreläsningar och samtal på Lunds stadsbibliotek på temat hållbarhet, miljö och klimat - ett samarrangemang mellan Naturskyddsföreningen i Lund, Stadsbiblioteket i Lund och Hållbarhetsforum vid Lunds universitet. Onsdagen 22 februari kl 18-19.30 är temat "Jord - funderingar kring grunden för vår tillvaro" när Håkan Wallander, professor vid Lunds universitet föreläser. Read more
Africa Day for students and staff at Lund University on 1 March 2017. For a long time, Lund University has been collaborating with African partners and conducting research of relevance to Africa. We welcome teaching staff and students from Africa, and conduct contract education with African participants. Read more

In connection to the World Water Day (22nd of March, 2017), LU Water portal, LUCSUS, VATTENHALLEN and communication department at LU work together to host a conference for high-school students on the importance of water and wastewater (fully booked).
Klimatutmaningen 2.0 är en halvdagskonferens den 27 mars i Lund med fokus på klimateffektiva företag som förebilder för andra företag som arrangeras av Ideon i samverkan med Handelskammaren. Medarrangörer är Lunds Klimatallians, Klimatallians Skåne Nordost samt Landskrona Miljöforum. Handelskammaren har tillsammans med ett 15-tal företag tagit fram en rapport som beskriver företagens klimatarbete. Rapporten släpps till konferensen och några av de medverkande företagen berättar också mer på konferensen. Läs mer

Who wants to live in smart cities?
"A smart city is a city with open senses. With its sensors it can see, hear, feel, smell and taste digital information that contributes to a more considerate, efficient, safe and sustainable society.”
This may sound as if it was taken from Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World: the smart city that is everywhere, sees everything and takes care of us as citizens without us even noticing or asking for it, and where technology is like a living creature. Actually, the quote is from an environmental consultancy firm that offers services related to smart cities.
Collaboration is key to the smart sustainable cities of the future
Climate change, a growing population and increased urbanisation place great demands on our cities. Meeting these challenges requires collaboration to develop smart cities. But what does a smart city really mean and how do we create one?

Rapport: Argument för mer ekosystemtjänster
En ny rapport från Naturvårdsverket innehåller statistik, studier och forskning som visar hur ekosystemtjänster bidrar till människors välfärd och välbefinnande. Flera exempel i rapporten bygger på forskning från Centrum för miljö- och klimatforskning (CEC) och Biologiska institutionen vid Lunds universitet, t.ex. ekoystemtjänster i jordbrukslandskap och nyttan av mångfunktionella landskap. Det går att lita på klimatforskarna. Det finns ingen snedvridning i deras vetenskapliga artiklar som skulle riskera att sopa motstridiga faktauppgifter under mattan. Det framgår av en ny studie från Lunds universitet.
– Jag hoppas att resultaten från vår studie ska övertyga skeptiker att klimatförändringar är en realitet och att åtgärder som lyfts fram i klimatdebatten ska tas på allvar, säger Johan Hollander som är forskare vid Naturvetenskapliga fakulteten på Lunds universitet. New thesis on residential solar photovoltaics
A thesis recently presented by Alvar Palm at iiiee aims at adding knowledge about barriers and drivers to the deployment of residential solar photovoltaics systems. So far the Swedish subsidies for PV deployment have been flawed with uncertainties, complexities and discontinuations, and there have been important uncertainties regarding the future development of the institutional set-up.

New Report on Policies for Resource Efficient and Effective Solutions
PhD candidate Leonidas Milios at the IIIEE is scrutinizing on concepts and policies for resource efficiency based on circular economy thinking in a new report under the research project Mistra REES.
