Information from Management

The deadlines for the two parallel investigative assignments about CEC’s future activities and organization have been postponed – they are now to be finally reported to the Dean at the Faculty of Science on 14 November. On Friday, 18 November, all prefects concerned and the CEC Chairman will meet at the Faculty to be informed about the process forward. The week after (NOT 18 November as said before) we will hopefully have some information to share and discuss at CEC – we will come back on how, when and where when we know more.

The work concerning new office space continues and the Dean decided yesterday to order an investigation for the co-location of INES, CEC and the Department of Geology in Geocentrum I and ll. The assignment is scheduled to be completed at the beginning of 2023.

Fr
om this week Karin Hofvendahl is back at work, working part-time (25 per cent). Notice that Karin will not be working on regular tasks at present – talk to Anna Ekberg and Per Persson if you have any questions.

The Board (which met on 25 October) has mandated the CEC Chair to work with the CEC management to develop proposals on how the CEC and associated activities can strengthen the monitoring of current societal processes with the aim to be more policy relevant and improve the accuracy of our communication. We will come back to this once the work has started.

Our new colleagues from Computational Biology & Biological Physics will pay us a visit and present their research at the Friday Fika 2 December. We will give them a warm welcome! They are also invited to the CEC Christmas lunch on the 15 December.

What's up?

Did you know which is CEC's most visited webpage? It’s this one, where Anna Persson asks for the public’s help in reporting the first bumblebee queens of the spring.
Hitta vårens första humla 2022 | Centrum för miljö- och klimatvetenskap (CEC) (lu.se)

It has been shown 8 106 times (twice as many times as the start page, the second most visited page on CEC's Swedish website) and the visitors are apparently highly interested, with an average reading time of more than 8 minutes (!), which is exceptionally high. (The average time on the site is 1 minute and 47 seconds.) This year, Anna received 2830 bumblebee observations, and the year before (during the pandemic, when people spent more time at home and in their gardens) 3500 observations were reported.

As for previous years, the buff- and the white-tailed bumblebees, followed by the garden bumblebee and the tree bumblebee, were the most common species reported.
“This year's survey reinforces the findings from 2021 and 2020, which showed that most bumblebee queens emerge from hibernation when air temperatures approach 10 degrees Celsius. This temperature threshold appears to be the same regardless of where you are in the country”, says Anna Persson.
Most people have reported bumblebee queens from their gardens (55%) while about 15% have reported from natural areas. About half of the reports come from cities and towns and half from rural areas and smaller villages. Crocus was by far the most common flower that a bumblebee queen was seen visiting (35% of all flower visiting queens). Those who participated in the survey describe them selves as “beginners to bumblebee spotting” – 75% had given themselves a 1 or 2 on the level of knowledge about bumblebees (scale 1-5). They also described themselves as very engaged in nature and environment issues, with 75% indicating that they are more engaged than the average population.

LU Land lecture: Pesticides and wild pollinators
9 November 8:30 to 9:30
Pesticide use is an integral part of contemporary agricultural production but may also lead to damaging exposure for non-target organisms. How are bees, important pollinators of crops and wild plants, exposed to and affected by pesticide use in agricultural landscapes? At today´s seminar, Maj Rundlöf, researcher at the Department of Biology, will give an overview of how ecology can contribute to a greater understanding of how different species of bees and other pollinators are exposed to and affected by agricultural pesticide use. This seminar is held in Swedish.
