Dags att sätta biologisk mångfald på agendan
Drygt två veckor efter klimatmötet i Egypten möts ledare från världens länder på nytt, denna gång för att hantera en annan akut kris som mänskligheten står inför – förlusten av biologisk mångfald. Frågan är mindre känd än klimatkrisen och något ramverk motsvarande Parisavtalet finns inte på plats – något många hoppas att toppmötet COP15 i Montreal 7-19 december ska ändra på. Lundaforskare kommenterar utmaningarna och bevakar på plats.

Backafloden – den bortglömda stormfloden som kan lära oss för framtiden
Stormfloden som för 150 år sedan svepte bort hela samhällen och fick flera hundra människor att mista livet är nästan bortglömd idag. Detta trots att Backafloden är en av de värsta naturkatastrofer som drabbat södra Östersjön. I en nyligen publicerad kunskapsöversikt om stormfloder visar forskare vid Lunds universitet att bevarandet av det kollektiva minnet kring tidigare stormkatastrofer gör oss bättre rustade för framtidens extremväder.

Årets julklapp: Om konsten att komponera en kofta
Att årets julklapp skulle bli just det hemstickade plagget är en trendspaning från HUI som både förvånar och förskräcker. Forskarna Marie Ledendal och Cecilia Fredriksson kommenterar årets julklapp och sätter stickning i ett historiskt perspektiv.

Klimatstressad skog ändrar doft
Att vandra i skogen är inte bara en naturupplevelse, det är också en doftsensation. Men en ändrad doft från träden kan vara ett tecken på att skogen är klimatstressad. Detta är resultat som forskare tar med sig in i ett nytt projekt som ska utvärdera konsekvenserna av ett förändrat skogsbruk. Forskningsprojektet koordineras av Lunds universitet och finansieras av EU med 60 miljoner kronor.

Normer försvårar övergången till skogsbruk utan stora kalhyggen
I decennier har den svenska skogen brukats intensivt genom kalhyggen och trädplanteringar för att få ut så mycket virke som möjligt. Kultur och starka traditioner gör att skogsbrukare upplever att det är svårt att få kunskap om, och stöd, för andra skogsförvaltningsmetoder. Det menar forskare vid Lunds universitet som studerat hinder för ett hyggesfritt skogsbruk.

Fågelungar i staden påverkas tydligt av luftföroreningar och vilka träd de omges av
Livet i staden är hårt – om du är fågelunge påverkas du tydligt av en viss typ av luftförorening, samt av vilka träd som finns i närheten av boet, visar ny forskning från Lund. Bakom studien ligger ett nytt mer detaljerat sätt att undersöka vilka faktorer i urban miljö som ger en effekt på fåglar och djur.

How to live the sustainable idea
The Master’s in International Strategic Management is one of LUSEM’s flagship programmes. Programme director Ulf Ramberg is constantly on the outlook for novel approaches to develop the programme to stay competitive. This academic year, the MSc students were invited to join “Living the Sustainable Idea”, an extra-curricular track with a focus on sustainability issues that does not provide any credits, aiming at inspiring students.

New report: 10 New Insights in Climate Science
The 10 New Insights in Climate Science presents key insights from the latest climate change-related research this year and responds to clear calls for policy guidance during this climate-critical decade. The authors emphasize and unpack the complex interactions between climate change and other drivers of risk, such as conflicts, pandemics, food crises and underlying development challenges in the report.

Sustainable Teaching & Learning in Higher Education: Principles & Practices
Education is one of the ’paths’ in Agenda 21 towards a sustainable society. Education alone cannot achieve a more sustainable future; however, without education and learning for sustainable development, we will not be able to reach the sustainability goals. The Division for Higher Education Development at Lund Univsersity will arrange a seminar series that broadly deals with principles and practices of sustainable education.

Digitala kurser om hållbarhet
Resiliens, tippningspunkter och planetära gränser. Det finns många begrepp och koncept inom hållbarhetsforskningen som är relevanta att känna till även om man inte arbetar direkt med frågorna. Lunds universitet har lanserat en nätbaserad introduktionskurs som ska ge en större förståelse för vokabulären och förmåga att koppla hållbarhetsperspektiv till sitt eget intresseområde.

Lunds universitet erbjuder även öppna digitala kurser inom hållbar stadsutveckling och cirkulär ekonomi.

Research Communication: Understanding media and journalism

Why should I communicate my research? In this workshop, we'll step inside the newsroom and discuss how journalism works, what to think about when interacting with the media, and why you should take the chance to do it! You'll also get other handy tips on how to communicate your research in different ways and make a plan to do so. In this workshop, we will work with Understanding research communication, Learning about media, and Crafting your pitch.

This workshop is open to all early-career researchers at Lund University (i.e. Postdoc, Assistant Lecturer, PhD), as well as researchers from the Agenda 2030 Postdoc Excellence Programme, CEC, BECC, LU Land, and MERGE.

Sustainability Week 2023 – a great opportunity to present your research

Sustainability Week is an annual event organised as a joint venture by Lund University and Lund municipality. The program offers discussions and actions, exploring both societal challenges of today and hopeful visions for the future. Formas: The links between climate change, water and biodiversity
Open: 16 January 2023, Deadline: 30 March 2023
Formas is planning to open a call focusing on the links between climate change, water and biodiversity, and how related challenges can be addressed holistically.
The call will welcome researchers from all disciplines. We intend to fund research projects on this topic in two four-year stages. This call is for stage 1. We have reserved a total of 120 million SEK for the first stage. Preliminary, applicants may apply for a maximum of 12–16 million SEK for stage 1.

VR: Research project grant: Sustainability and resilience
Open: 19 April, Deadline:23 May 2023
The purpose of the grant is to give researchers the freedom to formulate their own research idea, method and implementation, and to solve a specific research task within a limited period. This grant is funded jointly by the Swedish Research Council and Sida through the Government's development aid funds, as well as by Formas’ research grants. The research shall be of relevance to the fight against poverty and sustainable development in least developed countries. At least one researcher from a low income or lower middle income country shall participate.

VR: Project grant for research into societal security

The purpose of the project grant is to give researchers the freedom to formulate by themselves the research concept, method and implementation, and to solve a specific research task within a limited period. This is a project grant with focus, aimed at supporting research into societal security.

Biodiversa+: 2 new Flagship Programmes upcoming
  • Better knowledge to develop, deploy and assess Nature-based Solutions
  • Supporting societal transformation for the sustainable use and management of biodiversity
Flagship programmes address a particular biodiversity issue, aligned with the themes identified in the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). They allow us to tackle thematic issues through the wide portfolio of Biodiversa+ activities.

Forte: The postdoc grant is replaced by starting grant
From 2023, Forte is introducing a new grant type – starting grant – which will replace the national and international postdoc grants. The starting grant will be offered within an annual open call for proposals, starting in January 2023.
