Information from Management

Seasons Greetings
Dear CEC colleagues,
Today many of us will meet for a joint Christmas lunch at Grand in Lund, and I'm really looking forward to this. Then tomorrow we meet again for the last Friday Fika of the year. I would like to thank you all for your great work and efforts during the past semester. As usual, it has not been a quiet time at CEC; new things are happening all the time, and this is likely to continue next year. That's part of the charm of being part of the dynamic CEC environment even if it can also be demanding at times. But let´s forget work for a while and use the upcoming holidays to rest, relax and have fun together with family and friends. See you again in 2023 and note that our first Friday Fika of the new year is on 13 January, when Maria Blasi will talk about her experiences at COP15.
Happy holidays!

CBBP
We warmly welcome all new colleagues from Computational Biology and Biological Physics (CBBP) to CEC! From 1 January 2023 you are employed at CEC, and part of our working community. We are looking forward to fruitful collaborations and exchange of experiences. Although you remain in your present localities in the Physics building, we hope you will find your way to the Ecology building now and then, for example at the weekly breakfast talks every Friday at 10:00. We are planning an introduction to CEC for you, starting in January (date to be announced) with a meeting introducing who-is-who in the administration and how-to-proceed with common tasks such as research applications, purchases and travel bills. Later in the spring there will be more gathering opportunities for all employees at CEC, with the purpose of getting to know each other and each other’s research better.

Anders Irbäck will from 1 January 2023 be the Deputy Director of Computational Biology at CEC. Anders will also be the Line Manager of the staff presently employed at CBBP, and member of the CEC Management group.

The Dean has further decided to place all education previously managed by ATF temporarily under the auspices of the Department of Physics during 2023. This applies to all education at the basic and advanced level as well as the education at PhD level. During 2023, decisions will be taken for the permanent placement of education for 2024 and onward. This work will be carried out in two working groups, one group will work under the board of fundamental studies, the other under the board of PhD studies. In both groups participants from CEC will take part. The work concerned with dividing the economy of ATF will also be carried out at the faculty level during 2023. Other practical issues concerning geographical placements, is the focus of upcoming work at the Faculty. CEC is involved in these processes as well.

Preparing for a possible disconnection of electricity
As you have probably heard, a considerable reduction in the availability of electricity is expected this winter. If the electricity available is less than the demand for electricity, this results in what is known as a power shortfall. This could lead to short power cuts at the University.

The University must be prepared for disconnection of electricity | Staff Pages (lu.se)

The Faculty has developed a continuity plan in case of a power shortfall and power cuts.
You can find the plan here (only in Swedish thus far) (box.com).

Please note that:
Employees and students should not be on the faculty premises if power is interrupted, as ventilation, toilets and fire alarms may stop working. Exceptions may be granted for certain key functions. In connection with Svenska Kraftnät issuing a power shortage warning all employees and students are notified by e-mail, respectively Canvas (Lund University is responsible for this). Instructions are also given to go home in case of a power cut.

A choir singing
Lucia at CEC
The CEC choir brought plenty of holiday spirit to the office on Lucia, celebrated on 13 December. The festive occasion was shared with staff in the ecology building and the choir sang traditional Christmas songs in Swedish, English and French. Thank you to all members of the choir for bringing us light!

A new AI application creates concern
A couple of weeks ago, the company OpenAI launched a new artificial intelligence application, ChatGPT, which attracted much attention. The app can provide answers to questions that would give many students a pass in exams, writes the Lunda researcher Björn Lundberg in Svenska Dagbladet. He urges all universities and teaching teams to develop an action plan for handling learning and examinations based on the challenges posed by AI.

Changes to Formas annual open call
Reminder – Formas has made changes in their annual open call, applicable for those of you who is project manager for an ongoing research project that Formas is funding and is considering an application for their annual open call. If you are already a project manager for an ongoing research project with funding from one or more of Formas’ calls, you will not be able to be the main applicant in Formas annual open call 2023. However, this restriction will not apply to all types of project grants from Formas. For example, the restriction does not apply to grant recipients from Formas’ communication call or any of the international calls where Formas participates as a research funder. More info is coming from Formats, keep an eye here:

Research Communication: Understanding media and journalism
26 January 2023 9:00 - 12:00 Kårhuset Hollywood
Why should I communicate my research? Do I really need to talk to the media? Instinctually, many have this fear of speaking with journalists - the voice in your head saying, "What do I say, how do I say it, will anyone listen?". In this workshop, we'll step inside the newsroom and discuss how journalism works, what to think about when interacting with the media, and why you should take the chance to do it! You'll also get other handy tips on how to communicate your research in different ways and make a plan to do so.

Previous participants have published on topics like water use, biodiversity scenarios, climate change adaptation, local environmental policies (see, e.g. Ecology & Society Special Issue, Environmental Research Letters Focus Issue ). It is open to all researchers with experience and/or interest in the archetypes approach (established members of the network as well as researchers wishing to join the workshop series for the first time). We are happy to welcome participants from all continents. Participation in the workshop is free of charge. If you intend to participate in person, you are required to cover travel and accommodation costs. We are currently trying to raise funds to support travel of PhD students and non-Europeans.

The 31st Annual Conference for the Society for Risk Analysis Europe will take place in Lund on June 18-21 2023
Abstract submission is now open. Take the opportunity to be part of a genuine interdisciplinary event and explore the benefits from risk research! Submit your abstract for a contributing talk, poster or suggestion for symposium to before January 15th 2023. There is also a possibility to propose special sessions when submitting abstracts. The theme of the conference is Risk and Assessment in a Changing World. The theme reflects that the world is changing; we have experienced a societal disruption due to global hazards like the pandemic and climate change where environments or institutions that have been taken for granted suddenly are in danger. This forces us to consider new risks requiring careful development of concepts and theories as well as novel approaches for assessment. In addition, the flow of information and disinformation, the urge to deal with complex and uncertain problems, and the desire for quality and transparency in science-to-policy processes, are challenging the knowledge, skills and expertise required for assessment, management, and governance of risk. Risk theory and risk concepts are part of research focusing on individual behaviour as well as decision-making at industry, business and societal levels. This conference serves as a platform for theoretical developments in risk perception, risk communication, risk assessment, risk management and risk governance. The conference will have a strong focus on climate and sustainability, and the interdisciplinary format will make it relevant to researchers, students and stakeholders working on the coproduction of knowledge to deal with complex and uncertain societal and global challenges. We want the SRA Europe conference in Lund to be an opportunity to visualise the benefit of scientific perspectives risk in research and in science policy relations, and the need to include these perspectives in higher education.
