On 6 May, the volume Renewing Higher Education: Academic Leadership in Times of Transformation, edited by Sylvia Schwaag Serger, Anders Malmberg & Mats Benner, was published.
The volume is an outcome of the CALIE project in which Lund University have joined forces with the University of Gothenburg, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. Together with Stanford University, UC Berkeley and University of Washington, they have explored the topics of academic leadership and renewal of education, with the aim of strengthening the capacity for higher education and research to respond to the long-term challenges facing higher education.
In the volume around 25 academics from Sweden and the US write about the role and functioning of universities in a time of societal and technological transformations and challenges. Chapters include themes such as academic leadership and innovation in higher education, digitization, life-long learning, the European University initiative, and pathways for improving doctoral education. The Lund University Agenda 2030 Graduate School is featured in one chapter. The volume can be accessed at the CALIE website, and will be launched at a digital conference – Academic Leadership & Strategic Renewal of Education in Challenging Times – which will take place on 18-19 May.

The purpose of Alliance Day is to celebrate and acknowledge the EUGLOH alliance. Each year the Alliance Day has a new topic. This year’s topic is about exploring the world with today’s constraints. How can we develop our curiosity in times when travel and exploration are limited and increasingly shifting to virtual spaces? How can we create a sense of belonging and closeness? Come celebrate our 2021 Alliance Day and learn more about exploring the world with today's constraints!
Some of the activities are: A round-table with vice-chancellors from each EUGLOH university connected to the topic and about constructing EUGLOH with today's constraints. Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, Ann-Kristin Wallengren will participate from Lund University, a cook-along with a French chef, virtual yoga, concerts and an intercultural quiz and much more.
All students and staff are welcome and the cele-brations will take place on 12 May 10:00-17:00.

An online roundtable discussion on 19 May at 19:00
Students' right to organise and to voice opinion is an integral part of higher education. Still, in many parts of the world students’ freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association, and the right to education are threatened. State and institutional actors – including universities – restrict and attack student expression through the use of force, coercive and disciplinary actions.
Target group: Mainly students, but also staff at LU.
The panel will consist of students and scholars involved in the protection and promotion of student expression across the globe.
Read more about global threats to student expression in Scholars at Risk’s 2020 report “Free to think”
Co-organiser: The Association of Foreign Affairs in Lund – UPF.
