Lund University & Universitas 21
As a member of Universitas 21—a global network of 27 universities, over 1 million students and 200,000 staff—Lund University aims to leverage the strengths of this network to not only be inspired, but to also inspire others.

The work at U21 is mainly divided into three different clusters (Education Innovation, Researcher Engagement and Student Experience) which provide students and staff with platforms for collaboration and exchange of experiences. Some examples include student competitions, joint project funding and annual meetings/workshops.

Activities and collaborations between LU and U21 members
The U21 network provides a range of opportunities, many in which Lund University already is an active partner. Some examples:

Collaborative Groups
The Faculty of Medicine at LU is an active member in the U21 Health Sciences Group that each year organises various activities, for example:
  • The annual Student Conference on the SDGs brings together students from the European member universities for two days to work with the goals.
  • The 2018 U21 Health Sciences Summer School was hosted by Lund University on the topic of “Climate Change and Global Health”.
LU is one of five members in the U21 International Fire Safety Consortium focusing on research, education, and partnerships in the following areas:
  • Fire Safety in the Developing World
  • Social Inequality and Fire Safety
  • Community Resilience
  • Wildfires and Wildland-Urban Interface
Funding opportunities
LU has now submitted applications to the U21 Global Education Enhancement Fund that aims to support U21 members in delivering and enhancing higher education for a rapidly changing and uncertain future. Partnerships of two or more U21 member universities can apply for this fund, working together to design better solutions for online teaching, learning and assessment, which can be subsequently shared as resources within the U21 network. The goal of the fund is to strengthen the network’s overall capacity to respond to current and future challenges in global education.

Recurring annual events
The 2020 U21 Education Innovation Symposium “Teaching for Sustainability” will be hosted by Lund University in 2021 (originally planned for October 2020).

U21 Early Career Researcher Workshop on “Water and Society” was hosted by Lund University in 2019.

Competitions
Lund University student wins the international round of the U21 RISE Awards.

Initiatives for collaboration by individual U21 partners
ACCESS – Academic Collaboration Chile Sweden – is a platform between Uppsala University, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (U21 member) and Universidad de Chile aimed at increasing cooperation in higher education between Sweden and Chile.

Together with the University of Maryland, USA
  • In 2018, Lund University was granted Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility funding for short visits between LU and UMD faculty or administrative staff.
  • Research collaboration between START (National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism), UMD and LU. Travel grants to participate in a START workshop at UMD.
  • A research project (within the Dept of Economic History) which puts forward a brand-new way of understanding long-term economic development by looking at how countries can build resilience against economic shrinking. The pioneer of the shrinking perspective is Prof John J. Wallis at UMD.
Together with the University of Johannesburg, South Africa
A Linnaeus-Palme project together with the University of Johannesburg for teachers and students – to and from UJ/LU. The project has several purposes:
  • To promote student mobility from South Africa because we know that student mobility from South Africa is financially difficult.
  • To promote digital education cooperation within radiology nursing education.
  • To promote doctoral student mobility within water resources education.
