The National Day of Sweden, 6 June

Since 1983, Sweden has celebrated its National Day on 6 June. This is the date on which Gustav Vasa was crowned king in 1523, which laid the foundation of Sweden as an independent state, and on which a new, important constitution was adopted in 1809.

The National Day of Sweden on June 6 became a public holiday for the first time in 2005. In 2004, the Swedish parliament voted to make it a public holiday. The final decision took decades to reach − various proposals and dates had been discussed under a succession of governments, for instance making Midsummer’s eve or Midsummer’s Day the Swedish National Day.

If you haven't visited the outdoor museum Kulturen yet you may choose to go on the National Day celebration with speeches and choir between 14:00-15:00.

If you want to experience some Swedish folk music and folk dance you should pick the 28 May for a visit on the annual Day of Folk Music and Folk Dance (13:00-17:00).
