Semla – more than just a bun
Have you noticed the small, wheat flour bun, with whipped cream in the bakeries lately? If you haven’t tried it yet, we can reveal that it is flavoured with cardamom and filled with almond paste – and it is a mid-winter delicacy to Swedes urging to fill up reserves after a long winter.

The traditions of semla are rooted in Fettisdag (Fat Tuesday – 13 February) when the buns were eaten at a last celebratory feast before the Christian fasting period of Lent.

Today, no such reservations exist and semlor (the plural of semla) usually appear in bakery windows as near after Christmas as is deemed decent. This is followed by a collective, nationwide moan about how it gets earlier every year. Shortly thereafter people begin to eat the things like the world will end tomorrow.

Increasingly, not just any semla will do. Every year, at around the same time the bakeries fill with semlor, the Swedish newspapers start to fill with semla taste tests. Panels of ‘experts’ dissect and inspect tables full of semlor to find the best in town.

5 bakery-bought semlor are eaten by each Swede per year, but many Swedes make their own. Find a recipe here

Student Competition!

Global Ingenuity Challenge: Promoting Cultural Inclusiveness in Society
Do you want to challenge yourself? Participate in the global virtual competition and represent Lund University in a team with four other students!

The competition challenges teams of undergraduate/masters students to come up with solutions to a real life problem, the results of which will be judged against teams from across the Universitas 21 network to result in one overall winner.

The process has as its core a three-fold structure: Define precisely the problem to be solved; discover a wide range of possibilities; determine the most appropriate solution. Students and facilitators are supported by an interactive web based platform: "Ingenuity OnLine" (IOL).

Teams will be made up of five students who will be given a challenge and two weeks (sometime during the period 18 April–9 May) in which to complete it. The team's work will then be translated into a three minute video presentation. Read more about the Global Ingenuity Challenge

Interested? Send an email to Pouneh Eftekhari: pouneh.eftekhari@er.lu.se by 31 March.
