Alumni event: Well attended Physics and Laser show
Over 600 alumni and their families experienced the spectacular Physics and Laser show when the Alumni Network organised special showings on 11 October.

Amazing experiments took place one after another, showing how exciting physics and science can be. The final experiment was a fantastic laser show, with over 500 lasers. The event was a part of the Alumni Network's family activities, which take place every semester.

Alumni event: Reception in London
On 4 October we hosted an alumni reception at the Swedish Embassy in London. Alumni enjoyed an inspiring talk by Professor Thomas Kalling, professor of Strategic Management and director of SITE at the School of Economics and Management (LUSEM).

As it was Kanelbullens dag (Cinnamon Bun Day), we cleaned out a local Swedish bakery and made sure our alumni could enjoy one of Sweden's most beloved sweet treats.

Ig Nobel Prize awarded to study 
At the Furuvik Zoo in Sweden, visitors and chimpanzees imitate each other to an equal degree. This was shown in a study published in the journal Primates in 2017. The researchers – cognitive scientists Tomas Persson, Gabriela-Alina Sauciuc and Elainie Madsen at Lund University in Sweden – are this year awarded the Ig Nobel Prize, which is presented to a handful of researchers each year for “improbable research”. The researchers received the award during a ceremony at Harvard University in Boston, USA on 13 September.

Course for recently arrived doctors is heavily oversubscribed
In order to utilise the medical expertise of recently arrived doctors throughout the country, Lund University is currently providing an intensive course for non-European doctors without a Swedish medical registration. The aim of the course, which was commissioned by Region Skåne and the Swedish Public Employment Service, is for the participants to pass the National Board of Health and Welfare’s proficiency test for doctors in December.

Alumni event: Sweden Alumni Reception in Tokyo
Sweden and Japan are celebrating 150 years of diplomatic relations this year. As a part of the celebration, Lund University visited Tokyo for the strategic university collaboration MIRAI between Swedish and Japanese universities. You can read more about MIRAI here.

On 9 October, Lund University, together with Linköping University, Stockholm University, Umeå University, University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University, hosted an alumni reception at the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo. Alumni had the chance to meet with the Vice-Chancellors of these universities and listen to a panel discussion with researchers within the fields of ageing, materials science and sustainability.

MatchIT will match recently arrived programmers with IT industry jobs
According to a forecast by the IT industry, Sweden will need an additional 70 000 programmers by 2022. Yet, there are many recently arrived people in Sweden who have a university degree and some experience in programming, but find it difficult to get jobs in the IT sector. Consequently, the MatchIT project is now underway. Lund University and the Blekinge Institute of Technology are the programme coordinators for the project, which is funded by the Swedish ESF Council.

Four LU researchers have received ERC starting grants
Why do proton collisions resemble the early universe? Will we see X-ray imaging of the connections between neurons in brain tissue one day? Can lung tissue be 3D bioprinted to help patients in need of a lung transplant? And what can you film in in less than 0.000000000001 seconds?

Alumni event: New York 
Lund University alumni based in New York City had the opportunity to mingle at the Official Swedish Residence on Park Avenue on 13 September, as part of a special reception co-hosted by Mr. Leif Pagrotsky, Consul General of Sweden in New York, and several Swedish universities.

Lund University at the book fair
Why is it so hard to differ between what is mine and what is yours? What does hard rock music and fossils have in common? And what did people eat during the stone ages? It was a great variation amongst the subjects discussed in the Lund University booth during the big book fair in Göteborg. Lund University returned remains to Australia
Lund University handed over the remains of an Aboriginal man to representatives of the Australian government’s Indigenous Repatriation Programme. The event in Lund was attended by Australia’s Ambassador Jonathan Kenna. A solemn ceremony was held in connection with the handover.
