Dekanbrev november 2022

Dean´s bulletin November

Advent is upon us, and the year is drawing to a close. Several major processes are underway at the Faculty, with the aim of developing our activities so that we can remain a strong and relevant player in research and education. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to give you all some information about the main points.

Reorganisation of the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics
A major change for the Faculty is the reorganisation of the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics (ATF). Today, the Faculty Board, in accordance with my proposal, has decided that the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics will be dissolved as an organisational unit as of 1 January 2023.

With this decision, I believe that the faculty will create the conditions for all employees and students at the department to have a better working environment and continue to conduct successful long term research and education in the subject areas of the department.

We are now continuing the work and focusing on making the reorganisation as smooth as possible. This is important for all employees, for the faculty and for the entire university.

Focus on environmental, geological and climate research
Reserach in environment, geology and climate is an area of strength within the Faculty of Science. Today, research and education in these areas is carried out at several of the Faculty's departments, mainly the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC), the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (INES) and the Department of Geology. A clearer coordination of these activities would be strategically important.

During the year, a study was carried out to analyse whether these activities could be coordinated within a joint department. In parallel, a study has been carried out at the CEC, concerning the coordination of major research programmes and collaborative platforms.

The faculty management has now met with the management teams of the departments to hear their views and also, to convey the faculty management's thoughts on how to proceed, based on the findings of the investigatiors. The meetings also included an overall discussion of the challenges and opportunities that a merger would bring. The faculty management is in favour of a merger and is now thinking further, on the basis of the initial discussions held, and planning further talks. A first step is to see if there are opportunities to co-locate Geology, INES and CEC in the premises of Geocentrum I and Geocentrum II. To this end, a so-called property study is now being carried out and is expected to be completed early next year.

We will shortly publish a webpage with information on the process of co-locating and coordinating the activities in environmental science, geosciences and climate sciences.

The establishment in Science Village - the next step
Finally, I would also like to tell you about where we are in the process of establishing activities in the Science Village.

At the beginning of October, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) jointly submitted a formal request to the Vice-Chancellor of Lund University to continue investigating the establishment of activities in the Science Village. This request was discussed at the Vice-Chancellor's Management Council last week, on 24 November, and it is hoped that the Vice-Chancellor will shortly decide on further investigation.

Recently, the faculty management teams have held several meetings to discuss how to proceed. We have agreed that the work will be carried out in a project form and we are now discussing how the project team will be put together. The plan is to identify project leaders, other relevant skills and to establish a project plan, once we have received clearance for further investigation.

The establishment in Science Village is of great strategic importance for these faculties, therefore both Annika Olsson, Dean of LTH, and I will be part of the project steering group. Representatives from the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Physics, as well as student representatives, will also be involved.

To link the continued work closer to the regular activities of the faculties, the faculty leaders have also agreed to slightly change the role and mission of the Science Village office. In future, the office will work primarily on issues related to the detailed planning work for the establishment, the location of Skåne University Hospital in Lund and the university's campus plan 2050.

From next year, all employees in the office will be based at the faculty offices, where they will continue to have tasks related to the Science Village establishment. In 2023, a lot will happen in the project, and I look forward to continuing to work on the Science Village establishment together.

Lund University's vision is to be a world-class university that understands, explains and improves our world and the human condition. The Faculty of Science contributes to this by changing and transforming – not just because we have to, but because we can and want to.
