Baffling genetics give lizards of the same species different dorsal patterns
Nathalie Feiner, researcher at the Department of Biology, was interviewed about a new study solving a genetic mystery that has long puzzled the world’s lizard researchers. The study concerns the brown anole species, whose females either have a diamond-shaped or v-shaped dorsal pattern. The study shows that the difference depends on mutations in a single gene. ‟It is likely that this mutated gene gradually slows the cells’ ability to migrate. When the cellular brake is applied, the diamond pattern appears; if not, you get the v-pattern”, says Feiner.
Astronomer maps the white dwarf stars of the Milky Way
Daniel Mikkola, doctoral student at the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics, was interviewed about a new study concerning the speed and movement patterns of white dwarves – a type of star which was once normal-sized but has collapsed after using up its nuclear fuel. ‟Thanks to observations from the Gaia space telescope, we have succeeded for the first time in determining the three-dimensional distribution of speed for the hitherto largest catalogue of white dwarf stars. This provides us with a detailed picture of their speed structure, which is completely unprecedented”, says Mikkola.
How to benefit passerine birds during winter
Caroline Isaksson, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Biology, was interviewed about the dos and don’ts of feeding passerine birds. Isaksson explained that you can benefit the birds by giving them a varied diet during the winter, when it is difficult for them to find their own food. The diet can consist of things like seeds, nuts and dried insects.
Researcher discovers new flight behaviours in the black swift
Anders Hedenström, Professor at the Department of Biology, was interviewed about a new study indicating two previously unknown behaviours in the black swift. It emerges that the North American bird species does not land during its migration lasting just over eight months. The study also revealed that, when the moon is full, the black swift rises to extreme heights where, by all accounts, it catches insects by moonlight. ‟This behaviour is very exciting and reminiscent of the vertical movements in relation to moonlight seen in zooplankton in the oceans, for example”, says Hedenström.
How worms handle hard soil
Katarina Hedlund, Professor at the Department of Biology and the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science, answered a reader’s question on the extent to which worms can dig in hard soil. ‟When the soil is hard, it is usually because it is dry, in which case the worms simply rest and wait for rain. They then dig again once the rain has wet the soil, making it softer. During dry spells, the worms move around in previously dug tunnels”, writes Hedlund.
Biologist responds to questions about white-tailed eagles
Susanne Åkesson, Professor at the Department of Biology, responded to a listener’s questions about white-tailed eagles and their eating habits.
Professor speaks about soil
Håkan Wallander, Professor at the Department of Biology, was interviewed about soil on the podcast Artpodden. Among other things, Wallander explained what the swarming earth consists of and the threats facing the world’s topsoil.
Species that had disappeared find their way back to Halland’s Väderö island
Ulf Arup, Museum Director at the Biological Museum, was interviewed in connection with the marked increase in the number of lichens on Halland’s Väderö island over the past 30 years. The latest inventory shows that there is once again a great diversity of lichens on the island. This indicates that the air has become better and cleaner.
