What's on
Meet one of the editors of The Conversation
Lund University is the first Scandinavian university to become a member of the British media outlet The Conversation. This entails an opportunity for LU researchers to communicate their research through media that reach an audience of many millions all over the world. On 20–26 September, Miriam Frankel, one of the editors of The Conversation, will be in Lund. Take the opportunity to discuss your writing ideas with her in an individual meeting. Book an appointment by contacting the faculty’s press officer lena.bjork_blixt@science.lu.se. If you want to find out more about how to publish your work through The Conversation, you can also attend Miriam Frankel’s open lectures on 21 September.

Staff in the Swedish media
Equation pins down chaos
Vladimir Osipov, postdoc at the Department of Chemistry, was interviewed on the subject of his part in formulating a mathematical equation which provides an exact answer to how chaos behaves at the quantum level. “Yes, we have produced an exact equation. Personally, I am surprised that this was at all possible”, he says.
Physicist interviewed about newly inaugurated free electron laser
Sverker Werin, professor at MAX IV, was interviewed in Kemivärlden Biotech about the inauguration of the world’s hitherto largest free electron laser, the European XFEL in Hamburg. “XFEL will become a centre, not only in Europe but in the world, for research requiring extremely intensive and extremely short x-ray pulses”, he says.
Biologist discusses parasites on the radio
Lars Råberg, senior lecturer at the Department of Biology, was interviewed by Radio Sweden about how voles are affected by selective pressure from parasites.
From plant odourants to sex pheromones
Martin N Andersson, researcher at the Department of Biology, was interviewed about a new study showing that the receptors enabling the primitive moth species eriocrania semipurpurella to find an individual of the opposite sex probably evolved from receptors that help the moths perceive the fragrances of plants. “More research on the receptors could potentially lead to more successful ways of fighting pests, for example by blocking the pheromone receptor so that the males cannot locate the females”, he says.
Biologist investigates how the Bogong moth navigates
Eric Warrant, professor at the Department of Biology, was interviewed by Radio Sweden about his research indicating that the Bogong moth navigates by using the Earth’s magnetic field. Among other things, Warrant mentioned the great interest in his research shown by industry and the military.
How to protect yourself from ticks
Lars Råberg, senior lecturer at the Department of Biology, was interviewed by several media outlets about how to protect oneself from ticks and the disease TBE. Råberg said that people who spend time in high risk areas should get vaccinated. The articles also feature Lars Lundqvist, who has worked at the Biology Museum for a long time.
