Is Sweden a tobacco success story?
Dive into the reasons behind Swedens low smoking prevalence together with The Swedish Cancer Society.
In 2005, Sweden became one of the first countries in Europe to ban smoking in all restaurants, bars and cafés. Since then, several more public environments have been made smoke-free, such as sport arenas, bus stops, and outdoor seating areas in restaurants and bars.
This together with other decisive policy measures have changed the behaviors and norms towards smoking.
With current smoking at 11% and daily smoking at 5%, Sweden has the lowest prevalence of cigarette use in Europe. But at the same time, the total use of tobacco and nicotine is currently increasing in Sweden. The increase in use is seen among both adults and youths. The use of snus (nicotine pouches) has been increasing among the youngest population since 2016 at an alarming pace.
At this webinar we tell the story about how Sweden decreased smoking and what challenges lie ahead. International collaboration is essential in reducing the use of all tobacco and nicotine products – working towards a Tobacco Endgame.
