Reliable functionality regardless of ambient temperature
Does a "normal" circuit breaker work in conditions with higher ambient temperature than normal room temperature?
Maybe, but there are obvious disadvantages by not carefully consider which component to use.
"Normal" thermal magnetic circuit breakers which we see in distribution boards for commercial and residential applications are primarily intended for such applications, and can be directly unsuitable in environments where the ambient temperature can reach values above room temperature. In a "normal" thermal-magnetic circuit breaker a temperature sensitive bi-metal element release the trip-mechanism at overloads and a magnetic structure is used for trip at short circuit conditions. The consequence is that thermal protection devices do not carry rated current and cause nuisance tripping, if the temperature raise above normal room temperature.
No bi-metal element
A CBI hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker do not contain any bi-metal element. Instead, the trigger sequence is based on a coil around a cylinder that is serially connected to the breaker's main contacts. The cylinder contains a core, a spring and an oil. In an electromagnet, the size of the magnetic field is proportional to the current flowing through the coil. Hydraulic-magnetic breakers take advantage of this fact, as the core starts drifting towards the end of the core when the current increases sufficiently for the power of the magnetic field to supersede that of the spring.
When the core is withdrawn into the coil, the force of the magnetic field grows to a set level that triggers the mechanism. This phenomena is not temperature dependent and it's therefore a CBI hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker always keep rated current regardless of ambient temperature.
By using CBI hydraulic magnetic circurt breakers you can secure consistent functionality in for example distribution applications where equipment cause heat or when applications are used in outdoor conditions.
