Updates and plans for the future
The Graduate School in Asian Studies has gotten off to a good start with a range of activities during its first three months. In January a website was launched, and in February we did a survey on the situation and needs among PhD students in Sweden. This will help us develop the Graduate School and will be followed up with further surveys.

In February we also organised the first PhD course, Research Ethics and Fieldwork in An Authoritarian Context (3 ECTS), which gathered 12 students, eight from Swedish universities, one from Finland, one from Denmark, and two from Austria. The course had professor Marlies Glasius from Amsterdam as a guest speaker. Since the course fills an obvious gap in PhD education and in light of authoritarian developments it will be a recurrent course in the Graduate School with the next round probably in spring 2024.

In March we organised three online events. Two of them dealt with academic freedom in Asia, including presentations on the Academic Freedom Index, and with country focused presentations on China, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and Indonesia. Several of the speakers had chapters in the new book, New Threats to Academic Freedom in Asia.

In March we also organised an event where three recent PhD graduates, or soon to be graduates, discussed their experiences. They were Savina Sirik from Gothenburg University, Kim Jarle Wroldsen from Stockholm University, and Elton Chan from Lund University. You can find information about their PhD theses here.

During the spring semester, the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies will have four visiting PhD students who will be able to present their work at seminars and use the Centre's facilities. The application round for visiting PhD for the fall semester to all three partner institutes is now open with a deadline of 15 May.

Further planning for the fall semester is underway. The first of the Graduate School's annual retreat will take place on 20-22 September in Ystad. Current and recent PhD students are welcome to apply by 15th May.

Other events for the fall semester include a new course, Ideologies in East and South-East Asia: Legacies and contemporary developments, a workshop on Indonesia, and much more, with more information to follow.

If you have news relating to Asian studies such as newly published articles for example, please contact our Communications Officer and we will publish the news on the Graduate School of Asian Studies website.

Spring wishes,
Marina Svensson
Coordinator of the Graduate School in Asian Studies
