Warmly welcome to the spring semester!
It might feel as if spring is far away in Lund as there has been an unusual amount of snow recently, but the spring semester is now officially underway. This year we are excited to welcome two new members of staff: Dr Macario Lacbawan, who is taking up a postdoctoral position and is working on indigenous communities in the Philippines, and Dr Youngyeun Koo, who is taking up a position as Associate Senior Lecturer in contemporary Korean society. We are also announcing 1-2 fully funded PhD positions with an application deadline of 15 February and with a start date of 1 September.

The Centre is establishing three new BA-level courses this year. One is a summer course focusing on social and political movements in East and South-East Asia (application deadline 15 March), and the two others are respectively a course on Global China and a course on contemporary Korean society given in the fall (application deadline 15 April).

As usual, we have a range of exciting activities and public lectures in the pipeline. We start out with two online lectures in January and February on respectively cuteness in the Taiwanese presidential elections and on propaganda and pop culture in China. More lectures, also in-person, will follow, so do keep an eye on our social media and our website!

For those doing a PhD in Asian studies in Lund or elsewhere the Graduate School in Asian Studies is arranging several events during the spring. The first out is a joint event with the Agenda 2030 Graduate School on food that takes place on 29th February. Other events will be announced later on the Graduate School's website.

Researchers at the Centre are involved in many different research projects and collaborations, and among the latest additions is our involvement in the Horizon Europe Programme, Twinning Call, EU in the Volatile Indo-Pacific Region (EUVIP), coordinated by Palacký University and including the University of Helsinki and the Catholic University of Louvain. The project analyzes the evolving relationships among major powers and their impact on regional stability in the Indo-Pacific. It also focuses on democracy and human rights issues in post-coup Myanmar. The project will organise workshops, engage in dissemination activities, and mentor junior scholars.

Wishing you all the very best for 2024!
