Summing up the first year and planning ahead
During its first year the Graduate School has organised a range of events that have involved 18 PhD students from Swedish universities, some of whom have attended several events.

We have organised five online seminars discussing academic freedom issues and recent PhD graduates' experiences. We have also organised a workshop on Indonesia in Lund, a workshop on policy writing and research communication in Stockholm, and an annual two-day retreat in Ystad. In addition we have organised two PhD courses, one on research ethics and fieldwork in authoritarian contexts and one on the role of ideology in East and South-East Asia. Six PhD students have been in Lund on the mobility programme and presented their research in seminars.

The spring is full with a range of activities, with more in the pipeline. We start out with a couple of online lectures on hot topics in the region. Our first in-person event is a joint event with the Agenda 2030 Graduate School on hunger and SDG2 on 29th February in Lund.

On 20-21 March we are organising a workshop on digital methods in Asian studies with a range of prominent scholars. The workshop is open to PhD students working with digital methods who will have an opportunity to discuss their work and challenges. The course on the Craft of Writing and Publishing Peer Reviewed Journal Articles is running during the second half of the semester and will accept a few more students (deadline 20 February). In addition, we are organising a writing retreat on 13-15 May in Sigtuna and accept a few more applicants (deadline 20 February).

On 22 May we will co-organise a one-day event in Lund on presentation skills with advice and feedback on how to become a better speaker. In addition, a number of PhD candidates will either be visiting Lund or Stockholm during the spring on the mobility programme.

The Centre of East and South-East Asia is announcing 1-2 fully funded PhD positions with an application deadline of 15th February.

If you have any ideas for future events or any questions, please contact us!

All the best

And this number has only increased since 2019. At the same time, worldwide obesity, malnutrition and food insecurity increase.
