New semester, new faces
The Centre is happy to welcome a new cohort of MA students. A record 30 students from 16 countries have begun their studies with us this fall. We also welcome a visiting scholar from Palacký University Olomouc, Martin Lavička, who is an expert on Chinese law and ethnic policies and will be with the Centre for the coming two years.

The fall semester offers a range of exciting events. Curious about the connection between food and nationalism? Then you should attend our event on 26 September and listen to Professor Katarzyna Cwiertka and Associate Professor Michelle T. King. In the Perspective Asia Lecture Series, you will be able to learn more about different aspects of Korean society, including its economic developments and the activism of victims of North Korean violence. Other lectures deal with digital developments in Indonesia, the US-China tech war and perceptions of China in Central Asia.

If you are a PhD student working on East and South-East Asia don’t forget to also look at the Graduate School of Asian Studies website. One of the upcoming activities this fall is a workshop where you will get insights into policy analysis and report writing (deadline 29 September).

Looking for something to read? Check out the different publications run and edited by scholars at the Centre. Among them is the Asia in Focus Journal which welcomes submissions by both MA students and PhD students. If you are curious about the Centre staff’s latest research outputs then also check their individual webpages.

Culinary Nationalism in East Asia
26 September 2023 13:15 to 15:30

What is culinary nationalism? What form does it take, and how has it evolved in China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea? What we eat is not only shaped by geographical factors, the existence of natural resources in a specific location, and individual tastes, but also by political, socio-economic, religious, and other factors and values. At this event, Professor Katarzyna Cwiertka and Associate Professor Michelle T. King will discuss forms and developments of culinary nationalism in East Asia.
