Information from Management

The project of investigating the matter of co-localization and of a joint department of CEC, INES and Geology is continuing. Part of the work is carried out in workshop format, one on the overall and organizational matters last week, and one focusing on research and lab use this week. The main goals of both workshops were to increase the knowledge about the overall process, and of each other’s work, activities, challenges, and opportunities, and to give input to the continued work in 2024. Summaries will be sent out later.

Note that there are no decisions taken yet on either a co-localization or a joint department. As mentioned before, a proposal for a decision on the establishment of a merged department, or a final position against such a merger, should be presented to the Faculty Board before the end of 2024, according to the Faculty Board decision in February 2023. A decision to merge is dependent on the possibility of locating all staff and activities at the same location. Therefore, work on clarifying the possibilities for co-location is of priority in 2023.
The following activities are taking place this semester, and the results are to be reported to the Faculty Board in December 2023:
  • Relocation of CBBP
  • Clarifying the need for teaching premises facilities - test schedules of all basic education at Geocenter II
  • Plan for office space – on a general level
  • Lab inventory – needs and possibilites
  • Analysis of the risks and consequences of a co-localization and of a merger
  • Identify questions for the continued work in 2024
On 26 October, all staff members are invited to an information meeting organized by the Faculty.
You can find more information about the overall project and a link for registration on the faculty web.

2602 konferens pufendorfias
What's up

Ullrika Sahlin and Åsa Knaggård are part of a new Pufendorf theme, Coastal Perspectives. Rising sea levels due to climate change increase the risk of flooding and erosion in coastal areas. Historically, coastal protection measures in Sweden have been limited, but we now need to step up. However, climate adaptation is hampered by limitations in knowledge about the consequences of climate change - and future developments and governance systems are not updated to address these new challenges. The Theme will explore novel approaches to accelerate society's ability to make decisions based on scientific and local perspectives and a wider range of knowledge sources.

Brainstorming meeting for teachers, 28 September at 15:00-16:30
CEC, in partnership with the profile area Nature-based future solutions welcomes teachers (PhD students to senior) to a brainstorming meeting on 28 September from 15:00-16:30 to discuss, develop, and formulate themes for project ideas or projects for bachelor and master thesis within environmental science or your own field/department. The meeting will be chaired by Johanna Alkan Olsson, lector in environmental science and the moderated discussion is intended to produce either individual or joint ideas that will be offered to students at events in October and/or November. The meeting will be held at Campus, TBA upon registration.
Before the meeting, we ask you to prepare/think about what subjects you would like to supervise:
1. Individual subjects: How can your subject be included in a thesis theme/topic in the broader perspective of the profile area? 2. Common subjects: What is the best way to cross-fertilize disciplines, e.g., with respect to subjects, methods, etc.? Please register for the meeting before 21 September by sending an email to Cerina
Wittbom (cerina.wittbom@cec.lu.se), so there will be enough fika for everyone.
