Information from Management

CIG Update
The development of a vision and a practical plan for the co-localisation and merger of CEC, INES and Geology (inofficially “CIG”) in Geocentrum I and II has been officially launched (Decision STYR2023/939 and the associated project plan). The project is steered by the faculty board and the dean, with help of a steering group which includes the director/prefects of CEC, INES and Geology (and is chaired by Per Persson), and a project group led by Karin Hall, which includes Yann Clough and his counterparts at INES and Geology. Student representatives from both PhD and basic education sit in both groups.

The next step is the development of an action plan which will include risk analysis and moments for broad participation of all at CEC in different forms (working groups, workshops etc.)… and of course, the faculty’s information meeting on 7 June (Registration link below, deadline 1 June). Updates can be found on the faculty homepage for the project (link below). The contact person for the project is the project coordinator Carina Jarl, and you are always welcome to reach out to Yann for input or questions.

Friday fika and seminars
The last Friday Fika for the semester will be on 16 June.  We will resume again on 18 August following the summer break. During the autumn, we will only have talks every other Friday (odd weeks) to have more time to discuss the ongoing processes regarding the future of CEC.
Please send suggestions for internal and external speakers to Anna Maria anna_maria.erling@cec.lu.se

Good to know: The purpose of the Friday Fikas and seminars is (according to a decision in the management group), to strengthen the community and cohesion within CEC and increase knowledge about ongoing research within CEC (including CEC's close networks) to ease collaborations. The purpose is as well to strengthen expertise about collaboration and policy processes/other relevant processes going on in society, to facilitate external collaborations (see objectives in the CEC Plan of Operations).

Public Holiday
Thursday, 18 May (tomorrow) is a public holiday and Friday is bridge day which means that at least the administration will be out of office and no Friday fika is scheduled. Have a nice long weekend!

Deadlines before and during the summer break.
Please bear in mind that administrative support will be reduced during the summer months. Therefore, please make sure to plan ahead and note that the following deadlines have been put in place:
  • Recruitment: All necessary information regarding recruitment, including financing should be given to Felix before 1 June. This deadline is crucial in order to get management’s approval before summer. Please contact Felix if you have any questions. felix.olofsson@cec.lu.se
  • Invoices: Make sure you process your invoices before you take leave to avoid late payment fees.
  • Credit card payments: This alternative for payments will not be available during the summer months, please make other arrangements.

Successful alumni event
Fifteen years ago, the first PhD students started their studies at CEC. Since then, 240 PhD students have graduated from CEC and ClimBEco. On 11-12 May, about 60 of them gathered at AF-Borgen in Lund for a joint alumni celebration with networking, workshops, lectures and a joint dinner. The event was a great success, and a round of applause is due to the main organisers, Ylva van Meeningen, Cheryl Sjöström and Natascha Kljun.

Nailing nine theses to the CEC birch tree
Last Thursday a beautiful new set of theses was nailed to the CEC birch tree, followed by a round of applause and cheers. The theses are written by former CEC PhD students, but at that time we did not have the birch tree for this tradition. After the nailing, the alumni went to the alumni event at AF-Borgen. The authors of the theses were Georg Andersson, Helena Hanson, Anna Zimmerman, Johan Genberg Safont, Magnus Ellström, Therese Irminger Street, Petra Bragée, Estelle Larsson and Ana Soares.

The 31st Annual Conference for the Society for Risk Analysis Europe - Risk and Assessment in a Changing World on 18 to 21 June
The world is changing; we have experienced societal disruption due to global hazards such as pandemics and climate change. Environments or institutions that were taken for granted are suddenly at risk, forcing us to consider new risks that require careful development of concepts and theories, as well as novel approaches to assessment. This is the theme of the upcoming international conference SRA Europe 2023 in June, hosted by CEC, with Ullrika Sahlin as the chair, and the Department of Philosophy. Time: 18-21 June 2023

Norunda ICOS station provides vital measurements of clear-cut impacts
Norunda is Sweden's oldest greenhouse gas monitoring station. In the autumn of 2022, an area of 300 metres around the main tower was completely cleared. In April 2023, the ICOS instrumentation was adjusted. These interesting new conditions have now been highlighted in the European ICOS network newsletter.
