Anne L'Huillier – On the year as the rock star of science
In the United States, it is common for a Nobel laureate to be honoured with their own parking spot. In Lund, Anne has received her own bicycle stand. What could be more appropriate in Lund, right?

A year has passed since Anne L’Huillier became Lund University’s first Nobel laureate. Since then, she has tried to use the massive attention to spark our interest in research. She has also been navigating the oddity of becoming a rock star in the science world, who is frequently stopped in town and asked to be in selfies.

Each year, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences compiles a list of current Swedish research projects with the potential to create societal benefits, known as the 100 List. This year, nine research projects from Lund University made it onto the list. One of them focuses on diagnosing cancer through hair strand analysis.

UN Director and alumnus returned to Lund
Kaveh Madani, Lund University alumnus and Director of the UN’s University for Water, Environment, and Health, recently returned to Lund to launch WICE, a research and education hub addressing global water challenges. "Lund was where my journey began – a place that taught me to think big," he recalls. However, the path has not been without challenges. Accused of espionage and forced into exile, he has continued working to tackle some of the world’s most complex environmental issues.

New knowledge about type 1 diabetes – the large-scale TEDDY study will soon be completed
In 2025, children within the TEDDY study will submit their final samples at research clinics in Sweden, Finland, Germany and the United States. The international study has provided a lot of new knowledge about type 1 diabetes and how the disease develops. Analysis of the samples will continue with the aim of preventing the disease.

The mystery of the stolen Mars globe
In March 2015, a valuable globe of Mars was stolen from the Astronomy Library. After disappearing without a trace for almost a decade, it suddenly turned up at an antique dealer in Stockholm. The globe has now been returned to the astronomers in Lund. A similar one was sold a few years ago for $50,000.
