Nations of the world reach agreement on biodiversity
Henrik Smith, professor at the Department of Biology and the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science, and Maria Blasi Romero, researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science, were interviewed about the new agreement on biodiversity that was approved during the UN COP15 summit. “I think it is exceptionally positive and important that an agreement has been reached. There has of course been talk about whether agreement could be found at all,” says Smith.
Resistant mosquitos cause concern among researchers
Marcus Stensmyr, senior lecturer at the Department of Biology, has been interviewed about researchers’ discovery of mosquitos in Cambodia and Vietnam that are exceptionally resistant to pesticides. The species of mosquito in question spreads diseases such as yellow fever, Zika virus, Chikungunya and others. “It is worrying since it is the first time super-resistant mosquitos have been seen, and there is a risk that they will spread,” says Stensmyr, adding that there is an urgent need for other types of insecticide.
Astronomer talks about the night sky
Oscar Agertz, senior lecturer at the Department of Physics, has been interviewed about the stars that astronomers can study today, and in the distant future.
Birds can co-exist with marine wind power
Martin Green, researcher at the Department of Biology, has been interviewed about new research showing that marine wind farms do not represent as great a threat to birds as previously thought. Green says that there is room to build a lot more wind power at sea, and that birds need not present an obstacle to doing so if building takes place in the right locations and operations are paused from time to time.
Natural assets around quarry to be preserved
Nils Cronberg, senior lecturer at the Department of Biology, has been interviewed about the Land and Environment Court’s “No” to an expansion of quarrying activities in Södra Sandby. Cronberg has been fighting to protect the natural assets around the quarry since the turn of the millennium, when he discovered that the first fen had dried out and raised the alarm with the county administrative board.
