Swedish old-growth forests store 83 per cent more carbon than managed forests, according to a new study from Lund University, published in Science. The difference is substantially larger than previous estimates and is mainly due to large carbon stocks in the soil. The results are relevant to discussions about the role of forests in the climate transition.

A new report from the EU’s Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change suggests to phase out agricultural subsidies for the activities causing the greatest climate damage, while increasing carbon sequestration and introducing specific price tags for emissions. Here, five Lund University researchers share their views on whether the EU’s agricultural and food system can manage the transition – and what measures would be required.

That eating plenty of vegetables, wholegrains and legumes is beneficial for health is well known. More surprising, however, is that people who eat in a environmentally-friendly way also display nutritional values that are better than researchers had expected. This is shown in a new study from Lund University.

The new year in Sweden began with some record-breaking cold temperatures. Temperatures in the village of Kvikkjokk in the northern Swedish part of Lapland dropped to -43.6°C, the lowest recorded since records began in 1887. Yet for the majority of Swedish households, heating is not an issue. Those living in the multi-household apartment blocks that characterise Sweden’s towns and cities enjoy average temperatures of 22°C inside their homes, thanks to communal heating systems that keep room temperatures high and costs low. For many households, heating is charged at a flat rate and included in the rent they pay, professor Jenny Palm writes in The Conversation.

Sweden's investments in climate-friendly green steel are a potential driving force for both European competitiveness and energy independence. However, without a sustainable, strategic industrial policy, there is a risk that the technology will instead be commercially exploited in China, according to a new thesis from Lund University.

Some fungi are wasteful, while others recycle – and this can determine how much carbon is stored in a forest. Researchers at Lund University have now revealed how fungi manage their mycelium, the network that builds the structure of fungus. The results could provide new insights into the carbon cycle and climate.
