640x640transp 2023 in review
640x640transp The seasonal holidays are almost upon us and it's time to celebrate the year we're soon leaving. For REDEM, 2023 has been a year of great successes thanks in large part to our brilliant PhDs at the Department of Global Political Studies who've used the theme of 'rethinking democracy' to strengthen their own research projects. We've also had a series of other triumphs from senior collegues. And, of course, the star on the top of REDEM's tree is its renewal for 2024. Happy seasonal greetings to All!
Looking ahead to 2024
For IMER and GP PhDs
Now is the time for IMER and GP PhDs to think about activities they'd like to organise in either Summer or Autumn/Fall. REDEM exists to strengthen research and teaching on democracy at GPS so think of something that: a) supports your thesis research; b) links to democracy, understood broadly; and, c) can be of interest to other colleagues and students in the department. Hours are available to support organising the event.
For Lecturers
REDEM has resources to help with workshops (e.g. basic catering, guest travel, etc). This could be a standalone event, or linked to a collaborative publication or research application. Some colleagues have also used REDEM to support research assistance towards publication. REDEM has also collaborated with several other research platforms at Malmö University to help share the costs. And, if you're writing a funding application, also always feel welcome to mention REDEM as an example of the developed research environment at GPS.

640x640transp Democratic innovation in Ukraine
640x640transp Dr Olena Milienko gave an inspiring presentation explaining how local authorities in the Ukraine have been reformed to rebuild the lives and economy of persons internally displaced due to the ongoing war. Her expertise as a social scientist but also active local politician with close connections to key democratic reformers provided the basis for a highly informative talk.

The talk took place on 3rd October, and was a joint event with RUCARR. Dr Milienko is a British Academy Fellow at the Politics & International Studies Department of the University of Warwick. The event came about after REDEM visited Warwick earlier in the year.

Does digitalisation empower or hinder democratic inclusion?
Simon Sun (Maurer School of Law, Indiana University Bloomington) spoke on applying Elinor Ostrom's concept of the 'commons' to data as a way to build new political institutions.
The event was organised by Dennis Munetsi as part of a short series with more sessions to come next year...so stay tuned.

A big 'Thank You' to our research interns
This semester REDEM was lucky enough to have three talented junior researchers choosing to intern with the platform. These included Güldeniz Kurtuluş (Erasmus programme), Mateo Villamil Valencia (Erasmus programme), and Ali Giama (Global Politics MA student).
