After being closed since November, Moderna Museet Malmö is now reopening on 16 March. The reopening takes place in a safe way with a limited number of visitors. The exhibition Hilma af Klint – Artist, Researcher, Medium has been extended until 11 April. Also, the museum's opening hours have been extended in order to meet with the public's interest.

The exhibition was originally scheduled to open on 4 April last year, but was postponed until 16 June due to the covid-19 pandemic. Hilma af Klint – Artist, Researcher, Medium is a unique and comprehensive presentation of the artist, featuring some 230 works and filling the entire museum space. It was created exclusively for Moderna Museet Malmö by its director, Iris Müller-Westermann, and the curator Milena Høgsberg.

“We are delighted to be able to present such a large exhibition of this exceptional artist in Malmö. It will be a long time before an exhibition of this breadth and depth about Hilma af Klint will be shown in Sweden again. Hilma af Klint was a radical trail-blazer for art that turned away from portraying visible reality. Her quest was to visualise contexts that lay beyond what the eye could see. She had a strong conviction that she was creating her works in communion with a higher consciousness. The exhibition posits that we need to see the central importance of this spiritual belief in order to understand the meanings of her artistic practice and the works she created. Hilma af Klint had faith in the power of images,” says Iris Müller-Westermann.

Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was an artist who allowed herself to have an open mind about existence and wanted to open our understanding of a larger reality. Although her oeuvre as a pioneer of abstract art has been acknowledged and highlighted in recent years, Moderna Museet Malmö wants to offer new insights into her systematic explorations and transcendental approach in the exhibition Hilma af Klint – Artist, Researcher, Medium. The exhibition covers the artist’s entire career, and the selected works shed light on her research on nature and the link between the visible and invisible worlds. Hilma af Klint’s own thoughts on her creative practice and her methods are also discussed in this extensive presentation.

The number of visitors inside the Museum at any time is limited according to the Public Health Agency of Sweden’s recommendations. Please note that all tickets – including tickets for members of the press – must be booked in advance.
