Heat Exchangers
– New Design and Materials

Heat pumps are often looked at from a systemic perspective. That is reasonable, considering the vast demand for smart systems for housing, industries or entire cities. However, in order for a system to be truly energy efficient, its components also need to be efficient. In a heat pump, one of the key components is the heat exchanger.

This issue of HPT Magazine focuses on heat exchangers and how their efficiency is affected by design and choice of material. One of the challenges with heat pumps is the refrigerant: the alternatives either are deplete the ozone layer, have a high global warming potential, are flammable or are toxic.

Below is a list of articles included in the Magazine. The articles in bold can also be found further down, in versions shortened by the HPC.

The 13th IEA Heat Pump Conference in Jeju, Korea
Now is the time to submit your abstract to the next International Heat Pump Conference! In May 2020 the IEA Technology Collaboration Programme on Heat PumpingTechnologies (HPT TCP) holds their 13th conference on heat pumping technologies, this time on Jeju Island in Korea. The call for abstract closes on May 15.

Column: Decarbonising Heat with Heat Pumps:
a role for hybrid heat pumps?
In the choice between heat pump and combustion heating, the answer might be: both. Recent studies in the UK shows that the best heating source alternative could be a hybrid heat pump running on renewable electricity and bio-methane or hydrogen. That would be a highly decarbonised system.

Low Charge Evaporators for Industrial Heat Pumps
Generation of thermal energy for heating and cooling often has a negative environmental impact due to the fuels used. The need for such fuels decreases with installation of heat pumps. But the heat pump in itself is a potential source of greenhouse gases, as the refrigerants used often have a high global warming potential, GWP. This is regulated in the Kigali amendment to the Montreal protocol, and the heat pumping industry is searching for alternatives. Two major challenges regarding this is that many of the alternatives are either expensive or toxic. Therefore, the development of heat pumps must be in the direction of high efficiency, and low need for refrigerant.

Experimental Analysis of Falling Film Evaporator
Applied in Centrifugal Chillers
In order to decrease the use of refrigerants in heat pumps with high global warming potential, new ways are sought. There are basically two ways to go: reduce the amount of refrigerant used, or switch to refrigerants with lower GWP. To this end, a new type of evaporator has been tested, where a lower refrigerant charge is possible. It is called falling film. Various units have been tested with two different types of refrigerant.
