 Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference postponed
Latest update: 2020-03-12

Due to growing concerns around the corona virus (COVID-19), RISE, host of the Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference (NWBC), is today announcing that the 9th NWBC will be rescheduled from the current dates of 24–26 March to 13–15 October 2020 in Stockholm.

The decision has been made in close cooperation with our conference partner VTT. The wellbeing of our speakers, sponsors, attendees and staff is our primary concern. With NWBC being the leading event where research and industry meet to discuss recent wood-based biorefinery development, it is also our concern to provide a well-attended event with high-level speakers. Many of our speaker and partner companies already have travel bans in place which would prohibit their involvement, and we’ve been advised that others are likely to put similar measures in place over the coming weeks.

As a result, and on further monitoring the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have concluded that a postponement is the best course of action for all parties concerned. We will provide regular updates to the community regarding the 9th Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference on the event website and in the NWBC 2020 Newsletter.

We hope for your encouragement in this decision and apologies for any inconvenience it causes you that have already registerered. Hopefully, you still want to take part in the NWBC 2020 and are able to reschedule. Registrations made for the Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference, including side events, will be kept for the new date 13-15 October if not further noticed. Hotel room bookings, on the other hand, have to be handled by the registrants themselves.

We understand, though, if some of you who have registered are not able to attend on the alternative dates. If so, please do not hesitate to contact our registration company on nwbc2020@bentigo.com before 31 March to cancel your registration.

Research student opportunities:
  1. Scholarship award: The foundation Troëdsson Paper Engineering Travel Grant announces via RISE a scholarship award for a research student who participates in NWBC 2020 with a presentation. The winner is appointed based on performance, the subject's assessed importance and quality. The scholarship applies for a 3-month stay at RISE. Read more>>
  2. Award: Forest Products Engineers in Finland (PI) announces the Johan Gullichsen Award for a meritious presentation in the field of science and technology of forest products industries given at NWBC 2020. The prize is amounts to 2 000 EUR and is awarded to a young scientist or research student.
  3. No-Fee possibility: Sponsor contributions will be used to fund no-fee participation in the conference for selected research students at universities within EU, UK, Switzerland and Scandinavia who get a presentation for NWBC 2020 approved. This includes conference fee and evening activities, but not travel or accommodation costs.
  4. Travel costs: Forest Products Engineers (PI) supports the travelling costs of selected young scientists and research students from Finland (PI membership required)

About NWBC

NWBC  is a cooperation between RISE in Sweden  and VTT in Finland. The event gathers expert speakers from the chemical, energy, pulp and paper industry as well as recognized representatives from the global research community. The 8th NWBC gathered over 200 participants in Helsinki 23-25 October 2018. Besides presentations and discussions on plenty of aspects on wood biorefining, the participants got the opportunity to visit St1´s bioethanol plant and VTT´s pilot center. The conference program reflected the growing interest in valorising lignin from both pulp mills and ethanol plants. Another hot topic was the resource efficiency of the kraft process; will future biorefineries process wood with ionic liquids or deep eutectic solvents instead? Read more about the last event >>
