Smögen’s harbour, cliffs, and sea will once again be transformed into a luminous outdoor gallery during Island of Light 2025 - an international light art festival featuring large-scale installations by artists from around the world. This year the festival, which previously spanned four evenings, will run for ten nights.
2025 will feature 16 artworks; one highlight is SHAPES by Aleksandra Stratimirovic, created in collaboration with the Sotenäs Marine Recycling Center using discarded fishing gear and ocean plastic collected along Sweden’s west coast. The work reflects the festival’s focus on sustainability and circular design. Other featured artists include Philipp Frank (Germany), known for his Rock Lights projections on natural landscapes, and Ant Dickinson (UK), who creates immersive experiences combining light, sound, and landscape.
Smögen, famous for its iconic wooden boardwalk Smögenbryggan and lively fish auction, also offers cozy places to stay and excellent local dining - perfect for a memorable festival visit. |

Swedish Midsummer is a beloved tradition with roots in ancient fertility rites and is celebrated at the summer solstice with dancing around a flower-covered maypole, singing, and festive food like pickled herring and strawberries. People often wear flower crowns and gather with family and friends in the countryside. Cities tend to empty as Swedes head to the countryside to enjoy the long, bright evening. In 2025, Midsummer’s Eve is celebrated on June 20.
