| Valborg, or Walpurgis Night, is celebrated across Sweden on 30 April as a traditional welcome to spring. |
 |
Bonfires, choral singing and outdoor gatherings mark the arrival of longer, brighter days.
In Gothenburg, Valborg is also closely tied to student life. Known as the students’ night, it signals the approaching end of the academic year. Students don their white caps and organise the Chalmers Cortège, a student tradition dating back to 1909, where elaborately constructed floats make their way through the city centre, drawing large crowds along the route. Another highlight is the Spring Singing at Näckrosdammen when hundreds of singers gather for an outdoor chorus of traditional songs celebrating the arrival of spring.
For a more classic celebration, visitors can head to Slottsskogen park for bonfires and music, or to nearby Nääs Castle for a scenic setting just outside the city. |
