Notice: Introduction of
Emergency Energy Surcharge

Dear Valued Customer,

The unrest in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have led to sharply increasing fuel prices. This unforeseen development is affecting businesses and consumers worldwide. For shipping lines, the shortage of fuel has resulted in significantly higher bunker costs, which are well documented. Consequently, several container line operators have introduced emergency fuel surcharges to recover these additional costs.

Ports are also energy-intensive operations and are therefore exposed to fluctuations in fuel and energy prices. The Port of Helsingborg has seen a dramatic surge in the price of HVO biofuel in recent weeks and therefore finds it necessary to introduce an Emergency Energy Surcharge to secure our level of service and maintain efficient operations.

The surcharge will take effect on April 1st, 2026, and will remain in place for as long as energy costs remain elevated.

For transparency, we have chosen to implement a variable Emergency Energy Surcharge, applicable to all units moved over quay (loaded or discharged from vessel). The surcharge will be adjusted monthly according to the price of the specific HVO product used in our operations (see the details of the Emergency Energy Surcharge mechanism below).

We thank you for your understanding and support, and look forward to continuing to serve you and your logistic requirements.

Sincerely,
Port of Helsingborg

Emergency Energy Surcharge Mechanism

The mechanism is based on the 2024 average operational energy consumption per unit handled over quay, which equals 5.31 litres of HVO. The operational energy mix is heavily skewed towards HVO consumption, although part of the machine fleet operates on electricity.

Please note that this does not include other electricity consumption, for example for reefer container connections or office operations.

For the sake of simplicity, the surcharge is derived solely from the price of HVO, specifically “Neste MY Renewable Diesel”.

At the end of each month, the average price for that month will be calculated and used to determine the surcharge level for the following month according to the table below.
