| Before logging (at least partially) off for the summer, we at MIM would like to share our latest news with you. The second half of this spring semester has been eventful, even if things have still taken place mostly from the comfort of our own homes. We have hosted another succesful workshop/symposium on Norms and Values in the migration/integration field. Some research projects have been completed (NoVaMigra and MILSA), while others have started (Whole-COMM and Transnational Families in Europe). Our collleague Jacob Lind has received a postdoc grant to continue his research on undocumented minors' experiences. We are also making plans for a new PhD course for the fall semester of 2021. After these months of hard work we are looking forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming IMISCOE conference and, of course, to some relaxing days off. We wish you all a great summer! |

PhD students Caroline Adolfsson and Johan Ekstedt from MIM/MAU organized on April 28th and 29th a workshop on Norms and Values in Institutions, Societies and Migration. The workshop was held online via Zoom, and included contributions from MIM's Brigitte Suter, Michael Strange, and Ingrid Jerve Ramsøy. Nine parallel sessions were held on a variety of topics by PhD students from several countries including the USA, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands. The workshop finished with a keynote address by Professor Sophie Guerard de Latour from ENS Lyon on her latest article ‘Is hospitality towards migrants a democratic value?’. This workshop contributed to MIM's strong partnership with the IMISCOE network and served as a platform to maintain the international connections of PhD students in spite of the current travel restrictions.

The course will run online from November 2021 to January 2022 and will focus on three crucial functions of citizenship: citizenship as an instrument of selection (of migrants-cum-citizens), as an instrument of equality (between minorities and majority), and as a status of privilege (between citizens and stateless, and between“high-end” and “low-end” nationalities). These functions are theorized and problematized from a multidisciplinary perspective, drawing on both political and social theory. The course includes three very prominent guest teachers: Rainer Bauböck, Irene Bloemraad, and Ayelet Shachar, and should be of interest to many PhD students within IMER related fields. Funding of new project on Transnational Families:
Through the Joint Programming Initiative: More Years, Better Lives (JPI) and Forte, MIM researchers Brigitte Suter and Ingrid Jerve Ramsøy have received funding for the project Transnational Families in Europe: Care, Inequalities and Wellbeing. The project will be carried out in partnership with teams from Spain, France, and the UK, with the University of Reading as project leaders. You can read more about it here.
New post-doc funding for MIM researcher:
Jacob Lind has been awarded a grant of 2,3 MSEK by Forte for an international postdoc. The project is called Growing up in illegality: Young adults’ life histories about the impact of a childhood lived under a long-lasting threat of deportation – retrospective voices from Denmark and Sweden, and Jacob will be splitting his time between MIM and AMIF (Copenhagen).
Funding for book proposal:
MIM researcher Christina Hansen has received a grant of 15 000 SEK from Helge Ax:son Johnsons stiftelse to develop a book proposal for Berghan Books based on her PhD dissertation Solidarity in Diversity: Activism as a Pathway of Migrant Emplecement in Malmö.
Funding of workshop on Forced Return of Syrians:
Josepha Wessels has, together with colleague Sarah Tobin, received a seed funding grant from the Norwegian Centre for Humanitarian Studies (NCHS) to organise a workshop in Bergen, February 2022, entitled ”Safe for Syrians? Investigating the Forced Return of Syrians from the Nordics”. This will be organized in collaboration with the Chr. Michelsen Institute, Bergen, Norway, the Syrian Cultural Institute in Denmark, and Dar, Arabic Journal in Bergen, Norway. |
